WHY SALEMA & WESTERN ALGARVE:

When is the Algarve not the Algarve? Once you've reached Lagos! The stretch from Lagos to Sagres - the Costa Vicentina Natural Park - is real Portugal. With dozens of stunning, sandy beaches to choose from this is the most 'natural' and authenic coastline of the Algarve region. There's loads of water sports to enjoy - surfing is particularly popular - plus cycling and walks, horse-riding and places to visit too such as the historic centre of Lagos. Mostly, though, this area is about enjoying the best of southern Portugal and it's fabulous unspoiled coastline.

The village centre includes your basic, everyday shopping requirements plus a couple of restaurants too (there's also a restaurant on the resort at the golf clubhouse). Budens lies approximately equidistant between Sagres and Lagos. The latter is the largest resort on this stretch of coastline and the further west you head the more natural and rugged it becomes - you're in the heart of the Costa Vicentina Natural Park. There are plenty of beaches to discover whilst Lagos provides some added culture too with its historic centre.

Salema

One of the Algarve's best-kept secrets. This is a charming fishing village & seaside resort, dotted with white-washed houses rather than the over-development that blights the Algarve. It was recently voted in Europe's Top 10 Beaches for Families by The Guardian. It's crystal clear blue waters and fine golden sands attract young families in particular. There are occasional waves for body-boarding and the beahc is life-guarded in summer.

There's also a fine choice of authentic restaurants and cafes - seafood being the speciality. Boia, Atlantico and Agua Na Boca come recommended.

Lagos & Nearby

On the western Algarve coast, Lagos is quite a find combining beach, culture and activities for a fabulous family holiday.

BEACHES

  • Lagos is home to one of the Algarve's finest beaches - the 4 mile stretch of golden sand, Meia Praia. It's proximity to the town and its lovely beach bars make it a frim favourite
  • Praia da Batata is in fact known as the town beach. It's a smaller and more sheltered beach
  • There are other lovely beaches outside of the town famous for their sandstone rock formations and wonderful sunset views

FOR KIDS

  • Slide & Splash Water Park at Lagoa
  • Zoo Lagos
  • Zoomarine! water theme park - with dolphins!
