Why Cascais?

One of the west coast's most prestigious and beautiful resorts - a world away from the Algarve! This beautiful seaside resort combines a colourful history with sophisticated modern living. Little surprise that it's twinned with Biarritz in our beloved Aquitaine. Whether it's lazy days on the town beach, riding the rollers at Guincho, days out in Lisbon or Sintra, teeing off on championship golf courses, strolling the cobbled streets of the old town - Cascais has it all...

Out & About

Cascais
The Portuguese Royal Family enjoyed their summers here in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As such, the resort boasts some splendid palaces, historic buildings and fortifications. It reminds us very much of Biarritz in France - that's a fine compliment!

BEACHES - a good choice of sheltered sandy beaches in the town as well as world-famous surfing options such as Guincho, where the opening scenes of On Her Majesty's Secret Service were filmed (don't bother watching the rest of the movie - it's rubbish).

SURFING - watersports of all kinds are popular and there's superb boad-boarding, surfing and kite-surfing to enjoy.

CYCLING - there's a wonderful coastal cycle trail between Cascais and Guincho.

GOLF - two very high quality golf courses.

DINING OUT - as well as the (excellent) on-site options, Cascais has a wealth of quality eateries including the Michelin-star restaurant at Forteleza do Guincho. Unsurprisingly, seafood is a speciality.

SHOPPING - the cobbled streets are wonderful to stroll especially in the evenings. There are regular markets too.

WALKING TOURS - the best way to explore your new surroundings if you enjoy a day's walking. See all the sights with a local guide.

Estoril
Personally, we much prefer Cascais. Estoril is more built-up but it has a famous casino and hotel - Palacio de Estoril - which was a favourite haunt of Bond-author Ian Fleming (hence the Guincho connection). This stretch of coastline certainly has both the history and sophistication to inspire great story lines!

Sintra
The hill-top location of the royal family's summer palaces. The air is a little cooler up here and the 'fairytale' castles are magical. It's definitely worth a day trip.

Lisbon Attractions
The capital city justifies at least one day-out…

  • Oceanario de Lisboa – the second largest oceanarium in the world, built around a pier on the Expo, plus the city's Zoological park
  • Football-crazy kids (er, and Dads) will love a visit to the arenas of Sporting Lisbon or Benfica
  • Stroll the centuries old streets of Alfama - try and stay into the evening and soak up the summer atmosphere. Live music (fado) is popular
  • Lisbon's modern boulevards offers some very tempting boutique shopping

Activities

  • Boat Trips
  • Cycling
  • Diving/Snorkelling
  • Fishing
  • Golf
  • Horse-riding
  • Hiking
  • Kayaking
  • Kitesurfing
  • Mountain biking

Service: Valued their advice on the destination and accommodation, it was good to talk to someone who had been there.

Product: Couldn't have been happier with the accommodation - such a relaxed atmosphere, with super friendly staff, it felt like a real break. We actually didn't have any children with us and still enjoyed the surroundings and the facilities on offer.

    On 30-Nov-2016 we responded:

Service Comment: Easy booking process and they knew the venue and local area.
