Perfect Pastries in Portugal!

Claire Posted on 28th January 2016 by Claire

Any visitor to the Silver Coast cannot help but enjoy the rich tradition of food and wine which exists in this area of Portugal.  From sardines to wine and Port, many of Portugal’s culinary delights are available from friendly local suppliers and markets in the characterful towns and villages of this region.   The menus of even the most exclusive restaurants feature traditional favourites which are popular with locals and tourists alike.

One of our favourite foods from this region is the world-renowned Pastel de Nata, an indulgent egg custard treat.  These originated in the 18th century as a practical way to use egg yolks left over from the starching of nuns’ habits (which only required the egg whites!)  It was quite common for monasteries and convents to use the yolks to make cakes and pastries, resulting in the proliferation of sweet pastry recipes throughout the country.
